SKY SWITSER

Sky moved to New York City at a time when the punks on St Marks Place made it a street his mother warned him about, and volunteer ushering meant he could see 52 plays a year for free. After graduating from NYU, he spent his days adorning celebrities with rhinestones and custom made shoes, while his nights were spent duct taping feathers onto the shoulders of glam-rocking vixens in bathrooms that doubled as make shift dressing rooms. Twenty years later he is proud to look back on a career that spans from Broadway to Television/ Film to commercials to alleys and basements, but has always been chasing the magic.

On Broadway last season, Sky co-designed Mr. Saturday Night starring Billy Crystal. He collaborated with Tony Award winning designer Paul Tazewell and director John Rando to develop, distinguish and enrich the 41 different characters on the show.

Recently Sky designed Kathleen Marshall’s innovative new production of The Unsinkable Molly Brown for the Transport Group. Dick Scanlan completely revised the book and Sky was chosen to help connect the feminist icon of history to the modern world of today with bold new design storytelling. Sky has also designed many shows across the country, such as The Importance of Being Earnest, Sylvia, Squash, Propaganda!, Legally Blonde, Gorilla Man, and countless others. Each of them unique, but all of them seeking to balance elegance with quirk, vibrancy with heart, and realism with surprise.

At the age of 26 he became the associate costume designer of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels as it headed to Broadway. It was the first of 17 Broadway shows and First National Tours as associate designer including Legally Blonde, The Drowsy Chaperone, Aladdin, Tuck Everlasting and Pretty Woman. Sky has also repeatedly been hired as the associate designer for productions around the world when the designer was not able to be as involved as they would like to be. Sky has been entrusted to lead mounting the Broadway productions of Tina: The Tina Turner Musical, Escape to Margaritaville, and the Side Show revival, as well as Waitress for London’s West End and Pretty Woman in Germany.

A seminal experience of his life has been the honor of leading the recreation of the massive and intricate costume design for Disney’s Aladdin with new teams of artists in London, Tokyo, Hamburg, Sydney, Mexico City and two US tours.

Sky has also worked extensively in Television and Film as an assistant on a wide range of projects. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Saturday Night Live, Royal Pains, Oceans 8, Mercy, and Smash are just a few of the projects that have allowed him to showcase his ability to work fast, tell stories with fashion, and make every actor look and feel amazing.

Sky lives in the South Bronx with his husband, their daughter, and a tiny but mighty terrier.
